Color sticks (color pencil leads without wood) and a lot of time. From a photo from on my campus, yes that is a natural ring, though the lighting was added by yrs truly.

I love this, the added light gives it that much more of a special touch, like there are faeries living in there.
I think you did a wonderful rendering of shadows on the trunks. But the form of the forked tree in the foreground is not reflected in its shadow. That one is the most obvious, and I can't help but think that the outermost tree on each side would have some of the branches apparent in the shadow as well.
The quality of the photograph is disappointing, because I am sure this is stunning in person! Is all of the grain from the photo? If your drawing is still easily accessible, do you have access to a higher quality camera now?
